Yet another New York fashion week comes and goes. I wanted to post about the shows that appeal to my modern sensibilities, wild wild heart, and the fashion historian in me. Of course, let's begin with Anna Sui's collection, which spoke of Pre-Raphaelites, Nouveau hippie chic, and cultures worlds away. You felt like you were in a painting. I could see a real love of the history of textiles and prints. I mean there was references to lame people, come on! Check out this great video interview by Tim Blanks that goes into the interesting details!
Then there was Betsy and her punk pin up girls. Brandon Sun had a dress that combined the cut I love from the 20s with an easy to wear attitude-and oh yes with Samurai inspriation, B Michael threw in some Audrey Hepburn, Naeem Khan exuded culturally rich references in his elegant dresses and caftans. The 20s-30s aesthetic resided in his gowns a bit as well. Oh, the caftans... Badgley Mischka's sort of modern deco gal spoke to me. I would gladly adorn myself with any of those gowns for a party. Michael Kors embraced the 40s dame in today's world in his lines and prints. Jewelry was a bit downplayed in most shows. Anna Sui used it well with her culturally inspired chunky layered Masai like collars and bohemian nouveau butterflies necklaces. Thakoon featured interesting modern yet classic pearl bags.
Hopefully, you will be inspired to investigate some of the photos and videos from fashion week. I think you will be surprised if you love vintage because there were some great references this season. Not to mention Betsy put on a show as only she could. If you love the history of fashion you should definitely check out more on Betsy Johnson.
