Hippie Chic Vintage Jewelry: Inspiration From The MFA Boston Exhibit

Vintage Uzbek Jacket, Turquoise cuff, bakelite cuffs, Patricia Von Musulin  cuff.  Shary Connella photo.
Hippie Chic? Getting my hands on the new publication by the Museum of Fine Arts Boston which, accompanies their amazing exhibit, made me think... I have always been, at heart, just that a bit Hippie Chic. Born in the 70s, I wore my dad's vintage faded bell bottoms with a mix of both modern and older accessories. All throughout high school, and college really, I incorporated a bit of the Hippie. I had the 70s bohemian Indian inspired shirts and dresses.

I love wearing the long ethnic influenced clothing and layered looks.  Let me say this, I was never a full Janice Joplin, who rocked this look all in, but I have a love both the aesthetic and history.  The influences, sort of appealed to me- mixing Native American jewelry and hippie type accessories with current pieces. I think as someone with mixed cultural heritage and a Cher (I wish) sort of look- is partially why the "Hippie" sort of appealed to me. Instead of a complete book review of Hippie Chic by Lauren D. Whitley, I wanted to put together a list of hippie chic jewelry options to help inspire and peek your interest!

While the exhibit and book boasts amazing pieces (one such Thea Porter jacket, sourced by Shrimpton Couture, that is beyond fabulous), it also gives you the story behind them.

The book discusses the hippie movement and their looks, as well as the specific aspects of their fashion choices. While this may not appeal to your personal style- or maybe it does.... One thing is for sure you can apply the accessories.  The book itself, is broken up into: Trippy Hippie (more of the classic bold colors, floral prints and such), Fantasy Hippie (more of the romantic Edwardian inspired vintage look), Retro Hippie ( a throw back to deco prints and an emphasis on textiles-think BIBA),  Ethnic Hippie ( eclectic sort of world and culturally inspired clothing and accessories-India, Asia, Iraq, Native American, Meso-American...), Craft Hippie (leathers, patchwork, crochet- think Char).  Retro Hippie and Ethnic are what I gravitate to but let's take a look. Remember you can draw from the late 60s into the 70s for inspiration. Woodstock after all was in 1969:
